Metallurgical coke is the main fuel in smelting furnaces. The function of metallurgical coke is to melt iron ore or other metal objects (e.g. scrap steel) in the furnace at high temperature, and to add carbon to the metal structure. In addition, metallurgical coke can also absorb impurities in iron ore and scrap steel, and form waste slag in high-temperature environment. In comparison with foundry coke, metallurgical coke has smaller particle sizes, higher sulfur content (generally 0.1% -0.2% higher than foundry coke), larger porosity, higher reactivity, and higher strength after reaction.
